CHARTER OF 1726

In 1726, the Crown issued the Charter of 1726 and the mayor's courts were established in the 3 presiding towns of BOMBAY(now Mumbai), CALCUTTA(now Kolkatta) and MADRAS(now Chennai).They were the royal courts. they used to follow the procedure according to the ENGLISH LAW.
There were no facilities for legal training. most of the lawyers were having no knowledge of law but used to practice before the said courts.
The mayor's court were having no jurisdiction in criminal cases. the criminal jurisdiction was conferred on the GOVERNOR.

In the period of Ancient India, people used to live in groups. whenever there is an issue regarding something or any case occurs, the decision was taken by a small group who were held as HEAD( sarkar) in open compound mostly under the shade of a tree.
when the period of kings came in, the decision making power went into the hands of the king, he was the supreme authority of judiciary.
people used to follow whatever has been said by the king. there are many names such as VIKRAMADITYA. His decision was meant to be a regulating rule which would be applicable to all his kingdom and fellows.
The laws which were considered at that time were the Hindu mythology and the beliefs of people.
