In 1726, the Crown issued the Charter of 1726 and the mayor's courts were established in the 3 presiding towns of BOMBAY(now Mumbai), CALCUTTA(now Kolkatta) and MADRAS(now Chennai). They were the royal courts. they used to follow the procedure according to the ENGLISH LAW.
There were no facilities for legal training. most of the lawyers were having no knowledge of law but used to practice before the said courts.
The mayor's court were having no jurisdiction in criminal cases. the criminal jurisdiction was conferred on the GOVERNOR.
